VAL LAY.  Enamel painted pearlware figure of a dog (possibly a spaniel) nursing two puppies. H: 4.125". Made in Staffordshire, c1825. This figure pairs with a lone male dog titled ROVER &. Placed side by side, the pair read ROVER & VAL LAY.  Rover is known from a only a handful of examples; this is the only known figure of his family. Note the Sherratt-style bocage and base.

ROVER & VAL LAY are both pictured in Schkolne, Myrna: People. Passions, Pastimes, and Pleasures: Staffordshire Figures 1810-1835, p229.

To hold an early figure is to touch the past.
