MAKERS
This section of this site is the very first attempt to systematically catalog enamel-painted figures by their potbank of origin. This remains a work-in-progress.
More than a decade ago, Malcolm and Judith Hodkinson's rigorous scientific approach identified a group of figures we loosely dub "Sherratt." The Hodkinsons' technique--not unlike that used by botanists--carefully examines figures for unique, manufactory-specific characteristics. Its application led the Hodkinsons to identify other "families" of figures. They have generously shared their knowledge and enthusiasm with Myrna Schkolne, and very many trans-Atlantic visits, emails, phone calls, and photographic excursions have enabled Myrna and Malcolm to build an enormous photographic data base that the two of them mine with enthusiasm.
The links to the manufactories below will take you to a photo catalog of each manufactory's figures, biographical data on the manufacturer (where possible), and a guide to the figures' distinctive features. The latter establishes criteria for attribution to a manufactory--thereby opening the door to attributing additional figures. Myrna and Malcolm are constantly researching and learning. They welcome questions and comments.
Myrna has created these pages and accepts full responsibility for errors. Many thanks to the many individuals and institutions whose photographs have enabled this educational project.
