Pearlware Puzzle

I am puzzled by this little dog.
His owner thinks he is English pearlware, and so do I.  If you tip the dog over, the bottom edge of the base and the interior are unglazed, so apparently the dog has lost its base. Originally, it had either a small base or it was part of a larger figure group, perched atop a grassy mound perhaps.  The problem is that I have never before seen a dog of this form. Also, the owner cleverly notes the resemblance to this dog.
This weird little pup was salvaged from the cargo of the Diana, which wrecked in the Malacca Straits in 1817, complete with a load of Chinese export wares.

Alongside is another Diana dog. This one looks even less like our collector's pearlware pooch. There are definite differences in the mold--most notably the shape of the face--and, of course, the Diana dog is not decorated in pretty enamels.

Why the resemblance? We may never know. But it would be lovely to connect the pearlware dog to the Potteries. So if you have seen another like him, please let me know.

I think this little dog looks more like Chinese Qing Dynasty rather than pearlware. Just to be the contrarian.

I've looked through some books of Chinese pieces to no avail. These enamels are different. The detail that makes me think Chinese is the 'padlock' ornament on the collar.

Kevin, I also looked at all things foreign....but I keep coming back to the enamels and the glaze (as best I can tell from the pictures--but this collector is savvy!) So far, I still have the dog in England, but time will tell.

Hi. Have just come across your page while doing some research on a pair of possibly pearl ware dogs l have recently purchased. My dogs are identical to yours and l wondered if you had any more info. My dogs were in with a group of assorted Staffordshire figures.

Hi Sandra,
I am none the wiser...yet, but I live in hope!

I have what appears to be an identical dog, same mold, same colors, slightly different arrangement of the spots. Approx. 4 inches tall and 3 inches long. Hollow base, light white/grey clay, unglazed bottom. I have examined the piece with magnification and the glaze pools and forms drops all along the sides of the piece before reaching the base. This strongly suggests to me that the piece was not removed from a base or from a group after being glazed. The piece is pottery, not porcelain. There is an old faded collectors label on the bottom that reads "delft". Could probably find a way to send photos if you wish to see them
